Comprehensive ABA Services for Children with Autism

Tidal Consulting and Therapy is a behavior analytic practice in Salisbury, at the center of Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore. Board certified behavior analysts and trained behavior technicians provide individualized care in a dedicated clinic, with parents included throughout treatment. The clinic gives children a consistent place to learn, practice, and build skills that carry into everyday routines. Tidal currently serves children ages 2 to 10.

How care works

Three people make a program work.

ABA is not one clinician working alone. Every program here is written by a board certified behavior analyst, delivered day to day by a behavior technician, and carried into ordinary life by a parent or caregiver. When one of the three is missing, progress stalls.

Role one

The behavior analyst

A board certified behavior analyst completes the assessment, writes the treatment plan, chooses the goals and the data system, trains the team, and reads the graphs. The BCBA is accountable for the clinical decisions and changes the plan when the data says to.

  • Assessment and written treatment plan
  • Goal selection and data systems
  • Team training and oversight
  • Formal review at least every six months

Role two

The behavior technician

A registered behavior technician runs the day to day sessions under that supervision. This is the person your child sees most, so we match for fit, keep the assignment steady, and train to your child's plan rather than to a generic curriculum.

  • One to one teaching sessions
  • Session by session data
  • Consistency across settings
  • Ongoing coaching from the BCBA

Role three

The parent or caregiver

A skill that only works in session is not a skill yet. Caregivers get hands on coaching, written strategies, and honest updates, and they decide what matters most to work on. You are not expected to become a therapist. You are expected to be at the table.

  • You set the priorities
  • Coaching inside real routines
  • Progress explained in plain language
  • A say in every plan change

Supervision is not a formality. Plans are reviewed on a schedule and adjusted in between whenever the data moves, and you hear about it either way.

Insurance

Coverage, without the guesswork.

Maryland requires coverage of medically necessary ABA, and state regulated commercial plans cannot cap it by age or by dollar amount. We verify your benefits, explain your deductible and copay in plain numbers, and submit the prior authorization for you.

Getting started

Four steps, and we handle the paperwork.

Most families reach us somewhere between a new diagnosis and a hard week. Here is exactly what happens after you call, with no phase we forget to explain.

Step 01

Reach out

Call or send the form. We ask about your child, your concerns, and your schedule. It is usually a fifteen minute conversation.

Step 02

Benefits and authorization

We verify your coverage, tell you in plain numbers what to expect, and submit the prior authorization for you.

Step 03

Assessment

Two or three sessions of direct assessment and interview, then a written treatment plan we walk through with you line by line.

Step 04

Therapy begins

Sessions start on a set schedule with a named supervisor, ongoing parent coaching, and a formal progress review every six months.

Tell us what is happening in your family's everyday routines and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right practice for it.

About us

Clinical experience focused on the families we serve.

Tidal Consulting and Therapy is based in Salisbury and serves families across nearby Eastern Shore communities. The practice brings thoughtful, evidence-based ABA care into a welcoming local clinic with clear communication at every step.

Who we are

Tidal Consulting and Therapy opened in Salisbury in 2026. We provide assessment, clinic-based one-to-one ABA therapy, parent coaching, family connection groups, general ABA training, and upcoming small-group programs for young children.

The practice is deliberately small. Caseloads stay at a size where a supervisor can know every child, every technician, and every plan. Programs are written by board certified behavior analysts, delivered by trained behavior technicians, and reviewed on a schedule you can hold us to.

Our Salisbury clinic welcomes families from Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, Dorchester, and surrounding communities. If a family needs something we do not provide, we say so and point toward someone who does.

How we work

  • Goals chosen with the family, not handed to it
  • Data collected every session and graphed, not summarised at the end
  • One named supervisor who stays with your case
  • Honest answers about fit, availability, and cost before you commit

Kristen Ellis, M.Ed., BCBA, LBA, IBA

Kristen Ellis is the Founder and Clinical Director of Tidal Consulting and Therapy. She opened the practice in 2026 after more than two decades working with autistic children, families, behavior technicians, and clinical teams.

Kristen left Maryland's Eastern Shore to study and train as a behavior analyst in California, always with the goal of bringing that experience back home. She returned when local access to ABA was still limited and has continued working to make thoughtful, evidence-based care easier for Eastern Shore families to reach.

Her clinical background includes leading an applied behavioral early learner program, supervising more than twenty behavior technicians in one-to-one instruction, conducting intakes and skills assessments for children ages 2 through 10, and developing functional behavior assessments and individualized intervention plans. Her work is grounded in clear communication, careful data review, and practical support that families can use in everyday routines.

Kristen holds an M.Ed. in Special Education from James Madison University, where she graduated summa cum laude, a certificate in the Education of Students with Autism from Johns Hopkins University, and a certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis from Capella University. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, a Maryland Licensed Behavior Analyst, and an International Behavior Analyst through the IBAO.

Insurance and coverage

The plans we work with, and what coverage actually looks like.

Insurance is the part families dread most. It is also the part we do for you. Below are the carriers we work with, followed by a plain explanation of how ABA coverage works in Maryland.

Plans we work with

Send us your plan name and member ID and we will verify your specific benefits before you commit to anything.

Anthem Commercial and BlueCard plans
Aetna Commercial plans
CareFirst BCBS Maryland's largest carrier
Cigna Commercial and Evernorth
Highmark Commercial plans

Kaiser Permanente Commercial plans
Magellan Health Behavioral health carve out
Optum Behavioral network
UnitedHealthcare Commercial plans
Medicaid Maryland Medicaid and HealthChoice

Plan participation varies by product and by county, and networks change. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of coverage. If your plan is not listed, ask us anyway: we will check whether we can go in network, or look at other routes to getting ABA covered for your child.

How it works

Coverage in four plain parts.

01

Maryland's mandate

State regulated commercial plans must cover medically necessary ABA. They cannot deny it because of your child's age and cannot apply a dollar cap.

02

Medicaid coverage

Maryland Medicaid covers ABA for children under 21 when it is medically necessary. Prior authorization is required before services begin.

03

What we need from you

An autism spectrum diagnosis, a referral or prescription from a physician or qualified provider, and your insurance card. We handle the rest of the paperwork.

04

What you will pay

On most commercial plans, a deductible plus a copay or coinsurance. For many Medicaid families, nothing out of pocket. You get the numbers in writing first.

A free benefits check

You do not need to understand your plan before you call. That is our job. Send the plan name and member ID and we will come back within two business days with what your coverage looks like in practice.

If a plan denies a request, we tell you why, what the appeal looks like, and whether it is worth filing. You will not be left to read the denial letter on your own.

Questions families ask

Frequently asked questions.

If your question is not here, call and ask. Nobody will read you a script.

What is ABA therapy, in plain terms?

Applied Behavior Analysis is the practice of teaching skills and reducing barriers by changing what happens around a behavior: what comes before it, and what follows it. In practice we find out why a behavior is happening, teach a more useful skill that gets your child the same result, and measure whether it is working. Good ABA is collaborative and skill focused, and your child should want to be in the room.

Who do you serve, and where?

Children ages 2 through 10 from Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, Dorchester, and surrounding communities. Direct ABA sessions take place in Tidal's Salisbury clinic. Family training and coordination with other providers are scheduled around each child's plan.

Can my child receive other therapies in the same clinic?

Yes. Tidal partners with Smiley Pediatric Therapy, which provides separate speech-language, occupational, and feeding therapy services in the same Salisbury clinic. Tidal remains responsible for ABA services, and Smiley remains responsible for its services. With your written permission, providers can coordinate around shared priorities.

When will the social group and adaptive art class begin?

Both programs are coming soon. The social skills group is being planned for children ages 3 to 5 during evening hours, and the adaptive art class is planned once each month. Contact Tidal to join the interest list and receive schedule and enrollment details when they are ready.

What are the family connection groups?

They are facilitated gatherings where caregivers can build community, share practical ideas, and support one another. Tidal also offers general ABA training that explains core strategies in clear language and helps families use them consistently across everyday routines.

Does my child need a diagnosis first?

For insurance funded ABA, yes. Nearly every plan requires a documented autism spectrum diagnosis plus a referral or prescription from a physician or qualified provider. If you do not have one yet, call anyway. We will tell you what the diagnostic path looks like locally and who to contact.

How many hours a week will we be doing this?

It depends on the assessment, your child's age, and what your family can sustain. Early learners with significant needs often get more hours. An older child working on a focused set of goals may get far fewer. We recommend a range, explain the reasoning, and build the schedule around your family rather than the other way around.

Who will actually be working with my child?

A board certified behavior analyst writes and supervises the program. A registered behavior technician runs most of the direct sessions under that supervision, and is trained on your child's specific plan before starting. You will know both people by name, and we keep the assignment as stable as we can.

How involved will I be as a parent?

Involved by design. Parent and caregiver coaching is part of every program, because the strategies have to work on a Tuesday evening when we are not there. You get hands on practice, written strategies, and honest updates, including when something is not working.

How is progress measured and reported?

Data is collected every session and reviewed by the supervising BCBA. You see graphed progress on your child's goals, a formal treatment plan review at least every six months, and a conversation whenever the data suggests a change. Nothing runs on autopilot.

What does it cost, and how long is the wait?

For most insured families, cost is a deductible plus a copay or coinsurance. For many Medicaid families there is no out of pocket cost. We give you the numbers in writing before services begin. Availability changes month to month, so ask when you call and you will get a real answer rather than a waitlist form.

Still deciding?

A fifteen minute call is usually enough to tell whether ABA is the right next step for your child, and whether we are the right practice for it.
